Meteorological Field Scientist

Job Location: Sterling, VA

Job Duties:

The meteorological field scientist will be planning for, testing, and deploying new radiosonde systems across the U.S. and U.S. territories. 

The planning phase will include:

  • Obtaining a surface observing certification within 30 days of employment (employment is contingent on this requirement)
  • Preparing analytical methods for system evaluation such as running or developing code to statistically compare multiple soundings
  • Establishing processes for referencing other available meteorological datasets
  • Creating documents related to deployment of the system
  • Brief travel to 3 remote sites.


The testing phase will include:

  • Reviewing vendor documentation against a specification related to system capabilities
  • Conducting radiosonde soundings
  • Travel to 4 remote locations for approximately 3 weeks (each) to conduct radiosonde tests
  • Analysis of data and writing a final report including the generation of charts and graphs
  • Hours to include weekends and overnight shifts during field testing


The deployment phase may include:

  • Installing systems at over a dozen locations
  • Conducting system acceptance tests
  • Training meteorologists on how to use the radiosonde system
  • Professionally communicating in occasional tense environments is critical
  • Hours may include weekends and overnight shifts for training purposes
  • Travel will be significant during this phase.

Other responsibilities may include supporting field operations during 0z and 12z synoptic soundings, laboratory upkeep, and inventory of assets. Work hours will be a combination of normal business hours, routine shift work (for 0z and 12z operational sounding support), and on-demand hours driven by test schedule.


Qualifications (include but not limited to):

  • Bachelor’s degree in Meteorology
  • Ability to travel for extended periods of time
  • A U.S. Driver’s License and the ability to obtain a U.S. passport within a few months of employment.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50lbs
  • Ability to produce and organize documentation for multiple systems and multiple locations
  • Ability to setup meteorological observing systems in extreme environments
  • Setup scientific tests
  • 1-2 years of experience using data analysis tools such as MS Excel, MATLAB, or Python
  • Multi-task and have outstanding verbal and written communication (MS Office)
  • Basic understanding of radiosondes or other in-situ measuring systems and upper air
  • Ability to obtain a Public Trust clearance


Desired Skills:

  • Understanding of meteorological sensors and upper air measurements
  • Knowledgeable of basic Linux commands
  • Knowledgeable of satellite sounding products
  • Knowledgeable of statistical analysis techniques
